Research Description: Dr. Rock has taught mathematics in Florida and Mississippi at the middle and high school level. He has conducted a multitude of educational workshops and seminars at local, state, and national conferences in which his goal is to increase interest and enthusiasm of the teaching and learning of mathematics. He is the developer of the Internet Math Contests (http://mathcontest.olemiss.edu), which encourages students to utilize the Internet to solve challenging mathematics problems from across the globe.

Is Mathematics the Key to Success?
Project Description: What variables determine student success in mathematics at the collegiate level? Should we be worried about the success of our students taking mathematics requirements in college? Possible projects include: 1. Examine the grades of students taking college algebra at different times during their collegiate career. Is there a difference in grade for students taking college algebra at 8:00 am compared to 2:00 PM? 2. Examine the grades of students taking calculus at different times during their collegiate career. Is there a difference in grade for students taking calculus at 8:00 am compared to 2:00 PM? 3. Is there a correlation between a student's sub-score in mathematics and grade in college algebra?
Desired Student Qualifications: Interest in mathematics. Major or minor in mathematics helpful but not essential.
