Increasing Safety Belt Use

Project Description: The recent death of a local teen has prompted me to spend a lot of the weekend reading about seat-belt use and interventions to increase it among young drivers and passengers. The CDC estimates that about 83% of Mississippians wear seat belts. This rate is likely lower among male teens and young adults when parental figures aren’t in the vehicle. Two data-supported interventions have involved asking young drivers to sign promise cards or having socially-prominent volunteers hold up signs that prompt those in the car to buckle up (either - "Click it or Ticket it” “Buckle Up - I care”). I'm interested in implementing one or both of these with our schools (high school and potentially UM community) and evaluating the impact.

Desired Student Qualifications:

Project Timeline:

Duties of Student Researcher: Design "Promise Cards" with local teens, collect baseline and intervention (with support from other undergraduate research assistants), meet with school personnel to increase distribution of cards and ensure wide-spread communication.
