Paleobotany of the Flat Rock Church site

Project Description: The Flat Rock Church site in Benton County, MS has been known as a source of unusually well-preserved fossil leaves for over 150 years. Recent collections at the site include hundreds of leaf fossils, and preliminary study indicates that they represent a tropical rain forest environment dating from the Late Paleocene or Early Eocene. Much work remains in cleaning, preserving, cataloging and describing these fossils.

Desired Student Qualifications: Interest in botany or paleobotany.

Project Timeline: No set timeline.

Duties of Student Researcher: Specimen preparation, preservation and cataloging. Student researcher would measure leaf characteristics (size, shape, margins, veination) and quantify these measures to substantiate environmental interpretations.
