Research Description: My primary research project examines metaphysics and methodology (especially theories of demonstration, which are often implicit and assumed, and the principle of sufficient reason) in early modern British philosophy from Boyle through Hume. I have also written about related figures in seventeenth century continental Europe, especially Spinoza and Leibniz.
I have a long-running interest in film and television, and some of my work falls at the intersection of cinema studies and philosophy, including essays on Buster Keaton, on Whit Stillman, and on teaching the good life through cinephillia, and a conference presentation on Instagram's impact on star studies and marketing.
I have supervised theses on Catherine Trotter Cockburn's metaphysics (a SMBHC honors thesis), Jesuit responses to Descartes' metaphysics (a SMBHC honors thesis), Kant's aesthetics, Leibniz's logic and metaphysics, and Berkeley's idealism. I've been on thesis committees for many more topics, including the philosophy of religion, philosophy of humor, consciousness, and English and American literature.
I also serve as a support person for people working on cinema studies projects from a wide range of backgrounds.
