Key Words: Surface Electromyography; Neuromuscular Physiology; Motor Unit Control

Research Description: I am the director of Neuromuscular Laboratory of the HESRM Department. I use noninvasive techniques (surface electromyography, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), peripheral nerve stimulation, etc...) to test neuromuscular and sensorimotor functions (strength, force tremor, voluntary activation, surface EMG amplitude and frequency). In addition, my lab is also equipped with the state-of-the-art surface EMG decomposition technology to examine motoneuron firing behavior under voluntary muscle contractions noninvasively.

Available Research Projects:

Examinations of Bilateral Deficit Phenomenon in Human First Dorsal Interosseous and Biceps Brachii Muscles

Project Description: Bilateral deficit is a term that describes a phenomenon that the force produced during simultaneous maximal contraction of both limbs was lower than the sum of the forces produced by the left and right limbs separately. The current findings regarding the presence of this phenomenon is not consistent. In addition, underlying mechanisms are unclear. Therefore, the main purpose of this investigation is to examine the bilateral deficit phenomenon in human first dorsal interosseous (FDI) and biceps brachii muscles. An additional purpose of this project is to use surface EMG parameters to reveal underlying mechanisms contributing to the potential bilateral deficit in human upper body muscles.

Desired Student Qualifications: Student who is interested in exercise science, and/or willing to participate in data collection, analysis and writing.

Project Timeline: September 2017 to End of Spring 2018

Duties of Student Researcher: Data collection Data analysis Experimental report (using academic journal style)
